水 a plinth for water

 
水 is an object that would preserve the ostensible relation between the written sign and the object, the representation of the substance and the container. It is a metonymy that questions the perceived hierarchies interrogating what should be elevated. It wants to recall the significance of water in contemporary societies.

This project is informed by a Chinese ewer made in the Shandong province around 2500 BC (Credits to the V&A Museum). The context around the object was one of the most technologically innovative regions of China at that time and yet the place where the oldest Chinese pictograms have been found. The shape of the ewer seems to correlate with one of the oldest pictograms that depicted "water".
